Ogun Police Brutality, Removal of Veil: Human Rights Group Demands Justice for Victims

An incident involving a veiled Muslim woman named Adelani Zaynab and her husband, who were brutally assaulted by two police officers named Edet Egong and Ebierefa Julius on November 18, 2022, at their home in Muswab Abass Street, Adiyan Alagbado, Ifo Local Government area of Ogun State, has led an Islamic human rights organization, Taawun Legal and Human Right Institute, THURIST-Nigeria, to demand Justice for the Victims.

A statement dated November 19, 2022 and signed by Barr. Sulaymon A. Tadese, Director General of THURIST-Nigeria, states:

“We had received the report of an ugly incident involving a veiled Muslim Woman Mrs. Adelani Zaynab and her Husband who were brutalised by two Police Constables identified as Edet Egong and Ebierefa Julius on Friday 18th November, 2022 around 2:30pm at their residence at Muswab Abass street, Adiyan Alagbado, Ifo Local Government area of Ogun State following a domestic quarrel with a co-tenant at the residence.

“It was gathered reliably that the said policemen came to the residence of the victim on the request of a co-tenant who had a quarrel with the victim’s father in law to effect his arrest.

“We have been reliably informed that the two Police Constables Edet Egong and Ebierefa Julius does not appear in the normal police Uniform to carry out the said arrest and does not bring therein as required by the Law, a warrant of arrest to make such arrest valid and enforceable which the veiled Woman Zaynab insisted, before he was beaten by the said police officers in the process of which the Policemen removed her veil.

“We were also aware of how her husband was brutalized upon his arrival at the scene of the incident that some of his tooth gushed out and was equally arrested illegally and detained at Olomowewe Police Station of Adiyan Alagbado area of Ifo Local Government of Ogun State.

Barr. Tadese said, “It should be noted however, that police officers misconducts are ventilating wider in Nigeria Why the police headquarters sits and watch; that some Police Officers had the effontry to remove veil from a Muslim woman’s face unjustifiably is capable of reducing the Nigerian Police Force to nothingness and possible revolt from the Muslim community.

“Let us remind you that the atmosphere is still as cool as this because such happened in the south. Nobody dare try such in the North.”

According to THURIST, “The victims as well are law abiding citizens and would not result to self help to escape this act of Illegality and therefore calls on the Police Disciplinary Unit and the Nigerian Police Headquarters to treat this matter as important and brought the erring Police Officers to book.

“We believe it is time to join hands as a collective responsibility in cleansing the ever-dirty Nigerian Police Force and bring sanctity to the force,” he added.
