Chief Imam of Oyo is dead

Sheikh Mashood Abdul Ganiyy Adebayo Ajokidero III, the Chief Imam of Oyo Land is dead, the Muslim Voice NG reports.

Earlier today according to his official page on Facebook his death was announced saying, “As salaam alaykum. InnaLillah wainna Ilaihu raajiun. We Announce The Demise of the Grand Chief Imam Of Oyo. May Almighty Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaos. Amen”

A sympathizer named Misbau Alamu Lateef, who described the late leader of the Muslims in Oyo Town’s life and times said, “Baba was our father, mentor, leader, teacher (he taught me at Abeokuta and I lived with him and family), and a great scholar of consequential repute.

“He was a literati. A writer. An editor. A radio anchor and presenter. M.K.O Abiola of blessed memory met/saw him at Radio Cairo (Egypt) and wondered what such a brilliant Nigerian Scholar was doing working abroad instead of Nigeria. He hired him and brought him back home to teach at Zulikha Abiola Arabic School, Abeokuta.”

“Baba was a great father and family man. A grandfather. A Mufasir. An Imam. Above all, a Muslim.”

“Recently, I spoke with him on the phone and I discussed that with my aburo in Cairo Ustaz Adam Mas’ud Abiola. Few days later, Baba also called me back and we spoke like father and son. I didn’t know that would be our last discussion. He was a gem. A rare Gem!”

Oyo is an ancient city in Oyo State, Nigeria. Islam came to the Oyo Empire in the 14th Century during the reign of Mansa Musa in Mali.
