A scholar of Islam by the name of Fadeelatu Shaykh Abdulganiyy Aboto (Abdulganiyy Dhunuraeni Aboto) Al-Adabiy has passed away.
Shaykh Abdulganiyy is from Aboto, Nigeria. ‘Aboto’ is a village in Kwara State, that is why he was given that name. He went to the Shaykh Muhammad Kamaldeen Al-Adaby-founded Adabiya school.
He is the most well-known Islamic scholar in that area, and thanks to Allāh, who bestowed practically all of life’s blessings onto him, he is able to read the entire Quran without ever having to open it. He was a Haafidh who memorized the Quran and was well-known for his efforts to propagates Islam.
His death
According to information, Shaykh Aboto’s automobile was swayed three days ago while on a trip from Niger State. He got drowned in the flood along with his Ajanasi and few brothers because of a heavy downpour. Prior to their corpses being discovered today in/by the riverside, the vehicle and its 3 occupants—Shaykh and the other 2—had been reported missing since that time.
Disaster Management Report
by DO Akerebiata said: “A Toyota Corolla Car of Golden colour with Registration No: Lagos APP 544 ET was said to have lost control and found inside the river at Abattoir Bridge, Sobi Road, Akerebiata Area, Ilorin.
“The actual time the incident occurred was not known but the rear tyre of the car was discovered to be exposed to the view of passers-by last night. The information gathered was that the incident occurred due to the heavy down pour of early hours of Friday 30/09/2022.
“The rescue operation began early this morning (today Saturday 01/10/2022) at about 0810hrs. The corpse of one of the victims was found and recovered from the scene and immediately taken to a mortuary.
“Further searching continued this afternoon. The car was removed from the river and corpse of other two victims inside the car were recovered. The three victims involved in the accident were later identified as follows:
1) Sheikh Abdulganiyu Nuraini (popularly called Alfa Gani Aboto)
2) Alfa Azeez Omoekun
3) Alfa Nurudeen.
“The corpse of Sheikh Aboto is being taking to his country home Aboto, Asa LGA of Kwara State as at time of filing this report while that of the third person had been taken to Ilorin Muslim Cemetery for funeral according to the Islamic rights. The personnel of NSCDC Akerebiata Division, NPF and Kwara State Fire Service were involved in the rescue operations.”
The Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara Fire Service, Mr Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday in Ilorin. He noted that the two human bodies and a Toyota Yaris car with registration number: APP544E, were recovered from a river opposite Olusola Saraki Abattoir in Ilorin.
Mr Hassan said, “Rumour had it that the incident occurred during the Friday night downpour when the casualties were struggling to drive through the bridge and suddenly got stuck by the flood which pushed them into the river.
“In truth, the rescued work was like a joint operation. Because all the people in the neighbourhood gave their full support to the firemen throughout the operation,” he added.
The Muslim Voice recalls the heavy downpour, which lasted for several hours, wreaked havoc in several parts of Ilorin metropolis.
It’s shocking and sad- AbdulRazaq
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has described as shocking and sad the deaths of prominent Muslim preacher Sheikh Abdulganiy Dhu Nurayn Aboto al-Adaby and some other yet-to-be-identified persons in an auto crash reportedly in the early hours of Friday.
In a statement on Saturday signed by Rafiu Ajakaye Chief Press Secretary to the Governor on October 1, 2022 said:
“We received with shock and sadness the deaths of the popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Aboto and a few others whose identities are not yet known. As faithfuls, we accept the judgment of our creator. We beseech Him to grant the scholar and others involved al-jannah Firdaus,”
“This, indeed, is one sad news too many. The death of Sheikh Abdulganiy Aboto is a huge loss for the Muslim community and to Ilorin as a whole. He was known for his vast knowledge and great efforts in the propagation of Islamic message in the simplest form possible for his audience.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to the Emir of Ilorin Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, the families of the late Sheikh and the others, and the entire Adabiyyah family worldwide. It is our prayer that Allah will grant comfort to all the bereaved families.”

The Senator representing Kwara Central, Dr Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe has expressed sadness over the tragic incident that claimed the lives of highly revered Islamic preacher, Shaykh Abdulganiy Dhu-Nurayn Aboto and two other persons reportedly identified as Alfa Nurudeen and Alfa Azeez Omoekun who were together with him inside the vehicle that crashed into a river as a result of flooding.
Sen. Olorigebe, in a condolence message, described the death as a monumental loss that left everyone distraught, commiserating with the Muslim community, the families of the victims of the sad occurrence and the entire Adabiyyah family worldwide.
The lawmaker said the late cleric would be sorely missed and remembered for his bold and courageous sermons that drew attention to societal ills and promoted the tenets of Islam.
“It is with a deep sense of great loss but total submission to the will of Allah that I mourn the deaths of the highly revered Islamic Cleric, Shaykh Abdulganiy Aboto, and the two other persons who were involved in a ghastly accident occasioned by a torrential downpour with him. He was indeed a respected preacher and stickler for virtuous conduct that squares with the tenets of Islam.
“He would be sorely missed and be remembered for his fairness, boldness and thought-provoking sermons through which he engendered positive changes and edified the minds of his listeners.”
While commiserating with the entire Ansarul Islam Society of Nigeria, the families of the cleric and the others, and the Muslim community, Oloriegbe urged them to take solace in the fact that the late Shaykh lived a fulfilled life and contributed immensely to the propagation of Islam, praying that God forgives the shortcomings of the departed souls and accept their returns.
Sheikh Aboto’s death creates void that ‘ll be Difficult to fill – Saraki
In a press statement signed by his Press Officer on Home Matters, Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir; Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki has condoled with the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, Khaliphat-ul-Adabby, Sheikh AbdulKadir Kamaluddeen Al-Adabiy and the muslim ummah across Kwara State and the country over the demise of sad incident.
The Nigerian former President of the Senate, described the death of the popular preacher as a great loss to the Muslim Ummah and Ilorin Emirate community in particular.
Saraki said,”The death of Sheikh Aboto, and two others in an auto crash as a result of heavy downpour at the early hours on Friday, is a great loss to Islam and Ilorin Emirate.
He noted that Sheikh Aboto was a prominent Islamic scholar, preacher and spiritual leader in his own right. He was committed to the development of Islam in the Emirate and beyond. Many will not forget his soft style of preaching and teaching about how to live as a true Muslim.
“The demise of an Islamic Scholar is usually a sad occurrence and this particular one has created a big vacuum that will be very difficult to fill in many years to come. We, however, must take consolation in the fact that the late Sheikh lived a fulfilled, exemplary and pious life worthy of emulation. He will be remembered for this and many other legacies he left behind.
“May Almighty Allah comfort his immediate family, forgive his shortcomings and grant him a place among the righteous ones in Aljanah Firdaus,” Saraki added.
The Muslim Voice gather that his Janazah prayer will be performed on “06 – 03 – 1444AH, 7:00am- 8:00am at Ansarul-Islam Okekere, Ilorin, Kwara State” via a video by Professor Abubakar Ali-Agan. The prominent cleric will be moved to his hometown of Aboto-Alfa, Kwara State.
