Yesterday in the UK, Shaykh Ibrahim Munir, the legendary Muslim Brotherhood’s acting Mursheed, passed away at the age of 85.
According to a report by the Middle East Eye, Shaykh Munir (raḥimahu Allah) passed away at the age of 85 on the morning of Jumu’ah, at his home in London. He had been living in exile in the British capital following his departure from Egypt, despite persecution from one dictator after another.
Shaykh Munir, who was born in 1937 in the Egyptian city of Giza, spent many years as a leading member in the Muslim Brotherhood. He was twice jailed for his activities in the 1950s and 1960s.
He moved to the UK in the early 1980s after being released in 1975, and there he filed for and was given political asylum.
Spending the majority of the past forty years in exile, Shaykh Munir became the organisation’s acting leader following the arrests of Dr. Mohammed Badie in 2013, and his deputy, Mahmoud Ezzat, in 2020.
Dr. Mohamed Morsi (raimahu Allah), the first (and, as of this writing, only) democratically elected President of Egypt, was overthrown by a military coup d’état shortly after Shaykh Munir assumed the role of de facto leader of the Muslim Brotherhood outside of Egypt. As a result, Shaykh Munir was highly regarded by many people.
