9th Shaikh Uthman Bn Fodio Week: Celebrating the Life and Times of an Islamic revivalist


In honour of Shaikh Uthman Bn Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, the Sultanate Council organized a week-long public lecture series in partnership with the National Council of Muslim Youths Organization (NACOMYO).

Islamic experts from many corners of the world gave the lectures.

The scholars included American-born Shaykh Abdullah Hakim Quick from Canada, a PhD holder in Aspects of Islamic Social Intellectual History in 18th century Hausaland: Uthman Ibn Fodio; Professor Mohammad Taofeek Ibrahim, a former Vice Chancellor (VC) of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin; Professor S. O. Rabi’u of the Faculty of Law, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; Prof Chika Umar Aliyu
Economics Department
Usman Dan Fodio University sokoto; Dr Salisu Bakori of the Centre for Islamic Propagation, Katsina State and many more.

At the International Conference Center (ICC), Kasarawa, Sokoto the 9th Usman Bin Fodiyo Week closing ceremony session was attended by the His Eminence, Alh. (Dr.) Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria on 2nd November 2022 between 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM.

The Guest Speaker was Dr. Quick who presented a keynote address titled, “The Living Legacy of Sheikh Usmanu Dan Fodiyo in Americas.”

Professor Rabi’u stated that the Sokoto Caliphate had a significant influence on the propagation of Islam in Yorubaland while delivering a presentation on “The Impact of Jihad of Sheikh Danfodiyo on the Spread and Practice of Islam in South Western Nigeria” on Sunday.

The majority of Yoruba leaders and obas adopted Islam as a result of the Sokoto jihadists’ hard work, he claimed, which eventually drew a large number of their followers.

There isn’t a single Yoruba state that follows Islam without having some connection to the jihadists in Sokoto.

Former National Amir of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Shehu Abubakar, advised Muslims to be honest and genuine in all of their dealings and activities in his paper presentation titled: “Da’awah to Non-Muslim: the Sokoto Jihad Leaders’ Legacy”.

He also exhorted them to keep showing kindness to non-Muslims.
