The Secretary-general of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, has died.

Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo was born on April 20, 1959, and passed away on July 5, 2022. He served as OPEC’s Secretary General starting on August 1 of that year until his passing.

Barkindo, who was welcomed by President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, passed away Tuesday night at after 11 p.m.

The death the notable Nigerian politician was announced by Mallam Mele Kyari, group managing director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), in a tweet on Wednesday.

“We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly,” Kyari stated.

Later this month, Barkindo is expected to pass the OPEC scribe baton to his successor. He previously held the position of Acting Secretary General in 2006; he also represented Nigeria on the OPEC Economic Commission Board from 1993 to 2008; he served as president of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation from 2009 to 2010; and since 1991, he has led Nigeria’s technical delegation to UN climate negotiations.

At Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria, Barkindo earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1981. He later graduated with a master’s degree in business administration from Washington University in 1991. He obtained a postgraduate diploma in Petroleum Economics from Oxford University in 1988 before receiving his MBA. A honorary doctorate from Federal University of Technology Yola was also given to him.
