The murder of Mr. Syed’s high school friend Hae Min Lee in 1999 resulted in a life sentence for the 41-year-old man. The judge granted the prosecution 30 days to either start a new trial or withdraw the case on Monday.
Adnan Syed, who spent 23 years contesting his conviction for allegedly killing his former high school sweetheart and whose case was featured in the first season of the popular podcast “Serial,” was released from prison on Monday in a stunning turn of events.

The conviction was overturned “in the interests of justice and fairness,” according to Judge Melissa M. Phinn of the Baltimore City Circuit Court. She found that the prosecution had failed to turn over evidence that could have aided Mr. Syed at trial and had discovered new evidence that could have changed the outcome of his case.
Mr. Syed was sentenced to home detention until the prosecution makes a decision on whether to pursue a new trial or withdraw the accusations against him. Despite the fact that neither of these people have been identified officially or accused of any crimes, prosecutors claimed that an inquiry had pointed to two potential “alternative suspects.”
One said: “A crime we all have be shouting, “Adnan is innocent. He’s been wrongfully convicted” for decades. Today, justice prevailed over injustice. Good overcame evil. Truth over lies. Integrity over immorality.
“The evil and racism of the American Justice system that disproportionately convicts black and brown people more than any others must be dismantled and reconstructed without bias. It is time for #AmericanJustice to be truly blind and for the innocent to be freed. We can no longer accept a system that condemns those that have black or brown skin regardless of their innocence. While allowing those with money and white skin to avoid justice. Whether you are black or white, Muslim, Jewish, or Christian.…we all must take a stand. We must all vow to stop this from happening again. Because simply put, next time it could be you.”

She discovered that the trial covered up a far more complicated story than the jury – or the public – ever got to hear. The high school scene, the shifting statements to police, the prejudices, the sketchy alibis, the scant forensic evidence — all of it leads back to the most basic questions: How can you know a person’s character? How can you tell what they’re capable of?
Adnan Syed, who is he?
In 1999, Adnan Syed was a student at Woodlawn High School when Hae Min Lee, his classmate and girlfriend, who was 18 years old, mysteriously vanished one day after school.
Six weeks after the popular high school senior was killed, Mr. Syed, 17, was taken into custody. That same year, he went through his first trial, which resulted in a mistrial.
He was tried once more in 2000. He was found convicted by a jury of strangling Ms. Lee, whose body was discovered buried in a park in Baltimore.
He received a life sentence + 30 years in jail from the judge.
The now-41-year-old, who has consistently maintained his innocence, was serving a life sentence when he was released on Monday after spending more than 20 years in prison.
