In Paterson, New Jersey, a street was named for Palestine for the first time. The busy street is now known as “Palestine Way.”
Following the erection of the sign, thousands of people gathered to celebrate, waving Palestinian flags, dancing, and cheering. On May 15, a big crowd gathered in Paterson, New Jersey, to celebrate the renaming of one of the city’s busiest avenues to “Palestine Way.”
Art, music, and dance, especially the traditional Palestinian dance known as Dabke, were used to commemorate the occasion. Paterson is the county seat of Passaic County and the third-most populous city in New Jersey. It also has a sizable Arab population. According to estimates, the city may have as many as 20,000 Palestinians residing there.
The Paterson City Council unanimously agreed in April to rename a five-block length of Main Street to Palestine Way in recognition of the Palestinian community’s contributions to the city’s social life, business, and health care.
Rania Mustafa, executive director of the Palestinian-American Council, stated, “There are 20,000 people of Palestinian descent in Paterson city.”
Andre Sayegh, mayor of Peterson, addressed the enormous audience assembled on Main Street to commemorate the occasion. He said, “We make history today. Today, everyone, everywhere is Palestinian.”
“Palestinians are making countless contributions to our communities every day in the United States of America,” according to Sayegh.
The throng chanted for the liberation of Palestine and freedom for its people on the 74th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba Day, which occurred in 1948. The ecstatic Palestinian community also paid tribute to killed Al-Jazeera senior journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot dead by Israeli authorities while visiting a refugee camp.
