Alhaji Alarape Salman (SAN), who held the distinguished position of being the inaugural Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Kwara State , breathed his last at the venerable age of 81 on Sunday, January 7, 2024, in the city of Ilorin.
This marked the conclusion of an era, evoking deep sentiments of loss and reflection, as acknowledged by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State.
The Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, conveyed the governor’s heartfelt condolences to those affected in a statement, underscoring the profound contributions of the late sage to the landscape of Ilorin, the broader state, and the legal realm.
The former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, also expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Salman, emphasizing the immeasurable loss experienced by the Ilorin emirate. He further underscored that Salman’s indelible legacies, impactful contributions, and commitment to the development of Ilorin and Kwara State would forever be etched in memory.
Born on November 9, 1942, in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, Alarape Salman embarked on an illustrious educational journey, completing his elementary education at various distinguished institutions. His intellectual pursuits led him to Barewa College, Zaria, where he obtained his school certificate in 1959. Subsequently, he furthered his studies at Ahmadu Bello University, graduating in 1967. The year 1968 marked his induction into the legal profession following his attendance at the Nigerian Law School in Lagos.
Noteworthy is Salman’s ascent to the esteemed rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1987 during the military administration of Muhammadu Buhari. His legal career saw him serve as a deputy Solicitor-General in the Ministry of Justice in Sokoto before assuming the pivotal role of the first Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice in Kwara State from 1976 to 1978. His commitment to the legal fraternity manifested in the establishment of his private law firm, SARRA Chambers, named after his five children, where he continued to practice law until his final moments.
Alarape Salman leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond the legal arena, a legacy that encompasses his dedicated service, legal prowess, and the founding of a family. He is survived by his loving wife, five children, and numerous grandchildren, each a testament to the multifaceted life of this distinguished legal luminary.
