A circular from the Federal Ministry of Education permits the wearing of the hijab in all Federal Government Unity Schools across the nation. The Federal Unity Schools also known as Federal Government Colleges were established among other things to promote unity among Nigerians.
The circular’s copy can be found below. No school or principal has the authority to forbid Muslim female students from wearing the hijab, which is a fundamental right.
The Federal Ministry of Education is a part of the Federal Ministries of Nigeria that directs education in the West African nation. Currently led by Mallam Adamu Adamu, the Honorable Minister of Education (HME).
Mutiat Orolu-Balogun, executive director of the Hijab Rights Advocacy Initiative, commented on this development by saying, “From the on set two sets of uniforms were designed to allow for inclusion and respect for the religious sensibilities of Nigerians. While a good number of principals prevented the use of the alternative set of uniforms, some did.”
“Alhamdulillah rabbil alameen with this new circular issue on 1st February 2023, this position was reaffirmed. We are greatful to Allah for granting us victory and we thank all those that worked tirelessly to make this become a reality,” she continued.
