INTERVIEW: Fatima Abdullahi, a Hijabi who earns First Class 2022 Bar Final Exams

Fatima Abdullahi Esq., a native of Kogi State. She has been certified as an ADR Registrar and is a 2019 Nigerian Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) scholar. She was quite active in extracurricular activities and held many leadership positions while she was a student.

She received her primary education at Christ Comprehensive Schools, where she won the prize for being the best student. She then received a scholarship for her secondary education. She won the prize for the best graduating student in her secondary school.

Fatima was given an admission offer by the famous Bayero University, Kano to study law at the age of 16 after achieving a good score in the UTME. She became the first female acting chief judge of the BUK Students Union Court at Level 400.

She got the VC merit Award/Scholarship in succession as the Best Student while she was a student at levels 200, 300, and 400 and after graduating, earning her the honor of getting the award of best LLB graduating student in BUK for the 2020–2021 academic session.

Similarly, Fatima received scholarships for the sessions because all of her grades were the top, which resulted in a reimbursement of her tuition. The Law School Alumni of 1991 chose her and gave her a scholarship for law school.

The results of the 2022 Bar Final Exams of the Nigerian Law School were announced by the Council of Legal Education, and again she  received a First Class.

In this interview with The Muslim Voice, Nigeria, Fatima Abdullahi discusses her road to success and offers advice for future candidates on how to succeed.

MV: When you received your results, how did you feel?

FA: I was actually in the mosque When I saw the result I was excited, I was in a dream come true and yet it seemed so unreal, I was grateful to Allah for I knew that it hasn’t been possible without Him.

MV: When did you begin studying for the bar exam?

FA: For Bar exam studying starts the very first day on campus, even before the resumption task from lecturers await.

And so everyday reading is a must, but my reading proper started 3 months to the exams immediately after my internship.

MV: Did you have any other time-consuming pursuits? How did you manage to juggle such hobbies with your studies?

FA: Yes, I did. During my law school I was actually doing some side jobs, writing Articles for money, I even participated as an ad hoc official at the FCT Chairmanship Counsellorship Election, I had a lot of applications and interviews some on the day of my exam, but I never let any of it interfere with my reading schedule and even when it does, I find time to make up for it.

MV. In essence, what was your reading style?

FA: I am a morning person, normally I try to maximize my mornings before class, I wake up before 4am and pray, after which I will start reading while making preparation for class.

Also, I try to read anytime I am free during the day because I understood that at night, I won’t be able to assimilate much.

MV: What guidance would you have liked to have the year prior to starting law school?

FA: For me, I would have liked to have a mentor who would disclose the full reality of law school to me, particularly advised me on taking advantage of the early days on campus as things normally gets hectic few months to exam in which case it is impossible to cover and you can only rely on your past reading.

MV: Do you reside on or off campus? If so, how was it beneficial? How did it help if off?

FA: I stayed on campus, and it was very beneficial, the environment was comfortable, the reads had reading tables and so you can read at your comfort without going out, and seeing other people reading on the campus will also encourage you to study, also you could easily attend group meetings and tutorials when you are on campus and that help a lot. Unlike when you are off campus and alone without any motivation.

MV: Any success tips you’d want to offer the next set? Please offer some motivational words.

FA: To all upcoming bar aspirant my word to you is to stay calm and true to your dreams for dreams do come true, although it takes a lot of hard work and determination. I leave you with the following tips:

• Ensure to you your preparation early.
• Have a study plan/timetable and try to keep to it.
• Pray hard and ask your parents and loved ones to pray for you
• Always stay attentive in class, most of the questions are discussed in class and since there are lots of controversies and contradictory texts, in law school only follow what your lecturer gives you in class.
• Be familiar with your past questions, but do not rely too much on them.
• Be ready to maximize your 3 months extension period, it is the most free time you will get into law school.
