The Yoruba are predominant in the southwestern Nigeria, and comprise about 21 percent of the population. Over half of the Yoruba’s are Muslim. Yoruba Muslims are predominantly predominantly in seven states of Nigeria. These states are Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and Kwara. The foremost ruler of Iwoland, the Emir of Yorubaland, Oba Abdul Rasheed Adewale Akanbi, Telu I, and the concerned Yoruba Muslim intellectuals in Nigeria met yesterday, October 25, 2022.

The discussion at the gathering, which took place in Oluwo’s palace, focused on Yoruba Islam, politics, and the restoration of Islamic splendor that had been lost in Yorubaland. Sheikh Abdul Fatai Sanni, Alhaji Isa Akindele, and Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, who led other Muslim scholars, pledged to work with Oluwo to ensure that the Islamic light in Yorubaland, which has started to shine from Iwo, spreads throughout the area and beyond.

The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdul Rasheed Adewale Akanbi, the Emir of Yorubaland, declared in his speech that Islam is the Iwo people’s greatest treasure. “Islam is our treasure, and I won’t deceive you, Yoruba Muslims need leadership, an authority and a base for the propagation of Islam,” he asserted.

He said: “Sokoto State is known as the home of caliphate. It is where the Sultan, leader of Northern Muslims lives. Here in Yorubaland too, we must have a base for Islam just like Sokoto, and that is how Islam can begin to take its position, political and economically in the region.”

Oluwo expressed gratitude for the academics’ visit and pledged to assist the expansion and development of Islam in Yorubaland.
