For Non-Arabic Speakers, Qatar University launches Free Online Arabic Course

Qatar University is one of the top public universities in Doha, Qatar. It is ranked 208 in QS World University Rankings 2023.

As part of the university’s commitment to offering dependable Arabic content online, Qatar University has launched three massive open online courses (MOOCs) on the ‘edX’ global e-learning platform.

The transition to online courses is a part of QU’s efforts to broaden the educational options available to students, especially in the wake of the pandemic, when there are now more educational obstacles to overcome and a greater demand for students to have access to reputable academic institutions’ reliable, credible content.

“The courses are designed by QU to extend bridges between Qatar and the world and introduce local culture and identity to a wider audience, represented by three initial courses entitled: Arabic for Non-Arabic Speakers course, the Human Being in Islam course, and Qatar History and Heritage course. These choices come as part of the leading position QU plays in preserving identity and are based on the belief in the significant role the Arabic language plays in promoting Arabic and Islamic fields. This is consistent with the State of Qatar’s intention to support and preserve the Arabic language and strengthen its role following the activation of Law No. 7 regarding the protection of the Arabic language, which was issued by Amiri decree in 2019.

“QU includes an elite group of faculty members with expertise in teaching Arabic for non-native speakers through its dedicated “Arabic for Non-Native Speakers Center,’ which offers certificates of completion to international students of over 35 nationalities. Due to the growing demand for learning Arabic online, the university is keen to provide these courses with the goal of spreading knowledge. Since the launch of the courses a few weeks ago, around 600 users have registered from all around the world.”

In teaching Arabic to non-native speakers around the world, this course is the first of its kind on an open education platform. It makes a significant educational contribution that satisfies the needs of the global educational market. In order to supplement this course and create a micro-specialization program for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, the university is thinking about creating two additional courses.

Arabic for non-Arabic Speakers

Through interesting videos with local Arabic speakers and a variety of hands-on learning exercises, this course provides the fundamentals for beginning important discussions in Arabic. There is only one session accessible, and once it is over, the session will be archived.

This course aims to help you learn the basics of the Arabic language required for a simple conversation without needing to study Arabic grammar first. The well-designed, semi-genuine video conversations, practice worksheets, and hands-on exercises accommodate your different learning levels and styles. This design objective is to cover the four communicative skills required to learn a foreign language—reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

You will also learn numerous words and become familiar with the a-b-c’s of Arab culture, as well as the best ways to approach Arabic speakers. You will be introduced to some types of non-verbal communication that are popular in the Arab region, which you are expected to know.

Since this course is a doorway to the Arabic language, we will teach you the shapes and sounds of the Arabic letters as well. Arabic is a member of the Semitic language family.
