The concept of Faith, with an Arabic word of ‘Iman’, within the realm of the Islamic faith, is enclosed in the event of firm belief in the Being and Oneness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and other articles of faith, that conform with Allah’s pleasure/command.
The articles that make up faith, upon which a Mu’min (A faithful, who is an adherent to faith articles) takes up his ingredients of becoming a full-fledged believer, are made up of:
- Belief in the Existence and Oneness of God.
- Belief in the existence of angels.
- Belief in the existence of the books which are divinely revealed scriptures to God’s chosen prophets.
- Belief in the existence of prophets: Muhammad being the last of them, Jesus the penultimate, and others sent before them [like Moses, Abraham, David, Joseph, Jacob].
- Belief in the existence of the Day of Judgment: a mysterious day of accountability, with imaginable events, wherein good-doers and evil-doers will be rewarded sweetly and bitterly, respectively.
- Belief in the existence of God’s predestination (Qadar) of bad and good, which are inevitable phases to be crossed in the lifetime of every Allah’s creature.
Having established the above, as highlighted as what one who claims to be a believer and an upholder of the tenet of divine communion needs, in order to be named a conscious believer, needed more is the fact that, it’s only knowledge, to identify those as the articles of faith, but what goes beyond such knowledge (which is of benefit and importance) is the inculcation of those knowledge into the soul’s consciousness, so as to align with Allah’s injunction in every matter.
Islam And The Ummah: Of Religiosity, Animosity, Diversity And Disunity Of The Muslims
Addressed in Qur’an 2:285, with the sixth article of faith implied therein, are the first four. All six appear in the first hadith of the collection, Sahih Muslim, where the angel Gabriel asks to be told of Iman and Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) replies:
“That you affirm your faith in Allah, in His angels, in His Books, in His Apostles, in the Day of Judgment, and you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil”
Here is an indication of the spirituality behind the concept of faith, pointing to the need to possess the belief of and adherence to every form of VERIFIED/AUTHENTIC religious inclinations in our hearts, with the mindset that this is commanded by our Lord, The Most-High.
In every situation of life, whether good or bad, a strong faith will be able to sail through moments in ways and actions that would define moderation in reaction to those moments and by so doing, reward awaits the possessor of such faith adherent, as the affairs of a believer are blessed in every situation.
May Allah, Al Mu’min, grant us firm faith to be dutiful to every divine obligations and never strike us with calamities that would exceed our bearing threshold, Aameen.
