When France forbade a woman from donning a headscarf while attending school, a United Nations (UN) committee found that France had broken an international treaty on human rights.
A United Nations (UN) committee has ruled that France violated an international rights treaty when it banned a woman from wearing a headscarf while she studied at a school.
The UN Human Rights Committee declared the action in violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The committee’s judgment, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP), was made in response to a complaint made in 2016 by a French national born in 1977, whose attorney did not want her name to be made public.
In 2010, the woman was enrolled in an adult professional training program after passing both an admission interview and exam.
The wearing of religious insignia in public educational institutions is prohibited, thus the headmaster of Langevin Wallon High School in the southeast suburbs of Paris refused to let her enter.
France passed a law in 2010 prohibiting people from wearing clothing in public that covers your face. And although many blasted the law as Islamophobic, the “burqa ban” remains in place today, punishable with a fine and citizenship course.
