According to the Muslim Council of Britain, nearly half of Britain’s Muslims would be unable to break their fast during Ramadan this year.
Rapid inflation is generating substantial increases in food and energy prices across the country, wreaking havoc on the poorest parts of the country.
Many families will not be able to eat for Iftar because 46 percent of the British Muslim population lives in the UK’s ten most impoverished neighborhoods.
Islamic groups have reported extensive usage of food banks and urged the government to raise benefit payments to keep pace with inflation and enhance the UK’s social security services.
Tufail Hussein, director of Islamic Relief UK said, “Last week’s spring statement was an opportunity for the government to strengthen our social security systems and raise benefits payments to be, at least, in line with inflation.”
“Instead, they’ve been handed a real terms cut in their payments, and with inflation set to rise further this year, the cost of living crisis will become an emergency for the poorest families,” Hussein added.
