Eid-el Kabir, the Feast of Sacrifice is the most important feast in the Muslim calendar. It celebrates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael in submission to Allah’s command, before he was stopped by Allah. This is the second significant celebration in Islam. Recall that the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has earlier declared Saturday, 10th Zul-Hijjah 1443H (9th July 2022) as Eid-el-Kabir.

To commemorate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festival, the Federal Government has announced Monday, July 11, and Tuesday, July 12, 2022, as public holidays.

Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the interior minister who made the announcement on behalf of the federal government, extends his congratulations to all Nigerians and Muslims on this special day, both at home and abroad.

Aregbesola said,“I call on Muslims to continue to imbibe the spirit of love, peace, kindness and sacrifice, as exemplified by the Holy Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and to also use the period to pray for peace, unity, prosperity and the stability of the country, considering the challenges of insecurity we face at the moment.”

President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the minister said, is “committed to the security of lives and properties of all Nigerians, empowering the citizens for successful living, the provisions of social investments programmes and adequate security in the schools.”

While wishing Muslims a happy Eid-el-Kabir, Aregbesola urged Nigerians to take responsibility by using the N-Alerts application to alert law enforcement to any suspicious people or criminal activity they saw nearby. This is especially important during this festival as N-Alerts has been designed to help mitigate security challenges with prompt response from security agencies.

In a statement dated July 7, 2022, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, further urged all Nigerians to be vigilant and observant of intruders in their communities. As we celebrate the celebration this year, he remarked, “We all need to take responsibility for the security of lives and property.”

Aregbesola pleaded on all Nigerians to come together, put our heads, hearts and all we have together, in order to achieve relative peace for harmonious coexistence and put an end to insecurities in Nigeria, he reiterated.

The Minister reassures all Nigerians of the government’s protection of all under the law, maintenance of law and order and keeping the peace in all situations.

Eid-el-Kabir concludes the Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca). Eid-el-Kabir lasts for three days and commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to obey Allah by sacrificing his son. This festival falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and final month in the Islamic calendar.
