Oladeji Islamiyyah Olamide talks about how she earned a First Class in BSc Physiology at Lagos State University.
I am super excited to see myself as the first person to graduate with a first class in my family, It gives me great pleasure to share that I am a first class graduate and I feel so honored to have achieved this. It was a beautiful journey with so many obstacles. I didn’t want to attend my graduation ceremony till I realized last minute how much this moment means to my family. I had the best result in my class until 400 level when I CGPA dropped to 4.47. I had always promised my parents that I will graduate as the best student until I realized I needed to support myself financially. I didn’t achieve that, but trust me I got what I wanted.
Some days we don’t look like the journey. Some days we don’t look like the distance travelled 23rd march, 2022 was a day like that, not a day we remember the bruises and the tribulations. For every man lies a unique path towards realizing their dreams. I wrote UTME for five good years before I finally got admission in 2016 at Lagos State University to study Physiology. Although, during the course of struggle I was offered admission in 2014 at Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu to study Science Laboratory Technology, of which I graduated with a Distinction (3.89 of a scale of 4.0).
I started with a CGPA of 5.00 on a scale of 5.00 CGPA but owing to the fact that I wasn’t born with a silver spoon I needed to support my parents. I started the sales of clothing materials to make ends meet which I did till I finished 200 level. ASUU strike came knocking, all the students were told to go home, and there were no sales. I had to find another thing doing and I eventually got a delivery job which I did until the middle of the first semester in 300 level with the struggles of making sure I do not lose focus in my academics.
University Graduate Tells Her Success Story of Going From 2.79 GP to 4.02 GP
During our vacation, I went ahead to register in a catering school where I learnt how to bake cakes and pastries which I ventured into when I resumed for 300 level together with selling of drinks and Co, these took lots of my time and made me have a setback in my CGPA. I reduced the hours spent in baking to study more. Upon the start of my final year research project, the money I needed was a bit too much so I started to teach an SS3 student at Egbeda who was preparing for WAEC and UTME in other to save up so that my project would be executed.
In a nutshell, I worked all through while in school and still made a First class with Allah’s grace, perseverance, grace. To my junior colleagues out there, never underestimate how far you can go in life. Keep struggling and never give up. Do not depend solely on people to always assist you financially, think of possible ways you can as well help yourself to attain greatness. You are still more than capable of achieving your dreams. It is only the successful people that know that success comes at a costlier price. Glory be to almighty Allah who saw me through this journey. Entangled with these obstacles, sacrifices, challenges, I eventually graduated with a CGPA of 4.53.
