The International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition is being organized by Firdaous Integrated Services Limited (FIS) in collaboration with the Faculty of Law at Kwara State University and Adekunle Ajasin University. Firdaous Integrated Services Limited is a consulting, business management, capacity-building and research-based consortium of legal and policy experts based in Nigeria.
Eighteen (18) African universities have enrolled for the tournament, according to a statement released by Firdaous Intergrated Services Ltd (FIS) today. Nigeria is represented by five (5) of them. They are, Kwara State University, Adekunle Ajasin University, University of Ilorin, Ahmadu Bello University and American University of Nigeria.
While, University of Rwanda, Moi University, University of Dar es Salaam, Moshi Co-operative University, Kampala International University, Uganda Christian University, Islamic University in Uganda, Bishop Stuart University, University of Lusaka, University of Forthare, University of Juba, Bahir Dar University, and University of Lay Adventist of Kigali in Rwanda are among the other African universities that have registered for the Moot Competition.
The competition was declared open by the Attorney General of Kwara State, Hon Ibrahim Sulyman Senior, at the opening ceremony yesterday, June 6, 2022. The competition begins at 10 a.m. today, June 7, 2022.
The President of Firdaous Integrated Services, Abdulkareem Azeez, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Kwara State University, Prof Amuda Kanike SAN, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Adekunle Ajasin University, Dr Olugbenga Oke-Samuel gave the introductory remarks.
According to FIS, the International Humanitarian Moot Court Competition wherein students across different law schools in Africa will argue a hypothetical case on International Humanitarian Law before the African Court of Justice and Human Rights, according to FIS. The moot will be held online this year. The debate will take place entirely in English.
The moot will be divided into two sections, according to the organizers: a written section and oral rounds. All law schools in Africa are invited to participate in the written rounds.
Each of the teams are to argue their cases in an oral round in the preliminary level twice; once as prosecution and once as defence. The top 8 teams with the highest marks will then proceed to the quater-final which will be the knock out stage. The 4 teams that win their quarter-finals will proceed to the semi-finals and the two teams that win their semi-finals round will proceed to finals.
