Ruqayyah Adelakin, a Nigerian Muslimah has broken a new academic record at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) by becoming a first class graduate of the Department of Biochemistry.
She narrates her journey at LAUTECH in a short post on her LinkedIn page recently. Ruqayyah said, “Studying biochemistry wasn’t always the plan, I wanted to study Medicine, become a doctor and one day be addressed as Dr. Ruqayyah, funny right?!”
“Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) wasn’t my first choice regardless,” Ruqayyah said, “I was happy to at least get an offer into a university and Biochemistry was almost Medicine I thought!”

Ruqayyah never set out to break a record at LAUTECH
“I didn’t plan to graduate with a first class partly because of the impossibility myth surrounding it – no one had ever graduated with a first class in Biochemistry from LAUTECH. Then I got my 100 level result, then 200 level and I began to see a pattern. I was motivated and started working and praying towards a first class” she said.
Her department never produced a first class graduate
“In my third year my CGPA dropped to 4.49/5.0 but in year 4, it went back up to 4.51/5.0 and hope was restored but at that time I was so scared because I had just a year left and it could make or mar my result. Alhamdulillah, I and two other colleagues of mine broke the 19 year old record and graduated with first class honors in Biochemistry” she added.
