In a significant royal decree, Sheikh Badr Al Turki and Sheikh Waleed Shamshaan have been appointed as permanent Imams of Masjid Al Haram by the King. This prestigious appointment marks an important moment in the religious leadership of Islam’s holiest site, located in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
In Islam, the term “Imam” refers to prayer leader. It is a position of great honour within the Muslim community. An Imam is chosen based on their knowledge of Islam, their piety, and their skill when it comes to reciting the Holy Quran. During Hajj, Umrah, or even congregational prayers, it is the duty of the Imams to ensure that the call of prayer (Azaan) is made on time, Salah is performed as per the Sunnah, the sermons of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are read out to the people, and the pilgrims who come with questions and concerns are guided in the light of Islam.

Both Sheikh Badr Al Turki and Sheikh Waleed Shamshaan are highly respected scholars and religious figures known for their dedication to Islamic teachings. Their roles as permanent Imams will involve leading prayers and guiding the spiritual practices of millions of Muslims who visit Masjid Al Haram every year, especially during Hajj and Umrah.
Meanwhile, the current imams of Masjid Al Haram, Makkah are Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al Sudais, Sheikh Saleh Bin Humaid, Sheikh Usamah Khayyat, Sheikh Faisal Ghazzawi, Sheikh Maher Al Muaiqly, Sheikh Abdullah Juhany, Sheikh Bandar Baleelah and Sheikh Yasir Al Dawsary.
Additionally, following royal approval, Sheikh Muhammad Barhaji and Sheikh Abdullah Al-Quraafi were appointed as Imams at Masjid An Nabawi respectively. This decision, according to report, highlights the ongoing commitment to ensuring strong leadership at one of the most sacred locations in the Islamic world.
