Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, recently has been named the Sardaunan Ilorin, a prestigious title that the Emir of Ilorin Dr Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari said compensates for the Governor’s love for and investment in the culture and tradition of Nigeria’s southernmost Emirate.
That makes the Governor the second Sardauna of the ancient town. His predecessor — and the first person to hold the title in Ilorin — was the multibillionaire philanthropist Alhaji Umar Saro who died a few years ago. Sir Ahmadu Bello, arguably the most venerated politician in the old northern Nigeria in living memory, was mostly known for his Sardauna of Sokoto title.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has congratulated the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman, CON, on his appointment as the Sarduana of Ilorin by the Emir, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR.
According to a statement issued by the University Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, the Vice Chancellor described the appointment as “befitting and well-deserved”. Prof. Egbewole said that the Governor, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), deserves the traditional title conferred on him, considering his excellent personal qualities, numerous contributions and exemplary impacts as a political leader and a distinguished son of Ilorin.
Similarly, the Vice Chancellor particularly appreciated the tireless efforts of the Governor in ensuring that peace and harmony prevail across Ilorin Emirate and Kwara State at large of which the University has been a significant beneficiary. Prof. Egbewole, who is also the Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), specifically thanked the government and people of Kwara State for the generous support the University has been enjoying from them since its establishment about 50 years ago. “The Vice Chancellor wished the Governor a more successful tenure,” the statement added.
