The International School, Ibadan Muslim Parents’ Forum has challenged the West African Examination Council (WAEC) supervisor’s decision to bar hijab-wearing students from entering the hall to write a Senior School Certificate (SSCE) examination.
A petition to the director of the WAEC Ibadan zonal office, signed by the forum’s chairman, Alhaji Abdur-Rahman Balogun, on behalf of concerned students and their parents, rejected the Geography supervisor’s actions during the examination held on Friday, May 31, 2024, at the International School, Ibadan (ISI).
Students were only permitted to write the exam after removing their hijabs.
“This action is worrisome, particularly at a time when Muslim parents at ISI just secured a major judgment that declared the rights of Muslim girls in ISI to adorn hijab over their school uniform.”
“We believe the supervisor behaved as a provocateur for an unnamed interest group(s), and in bad faith. We hereby request that WAEC impose appropriate sanctions on the aforementioned supervisor and provide additional directives against such misbehavior that demonstrated religious intolerance and was capable of provoking disaffection and religious crisis. He should be directed to make public apologies for this indiscretion.
