Malam Umar A Namadi, Governor of Jigawa State, has suspended Alhaji Aminu Kanta, the state commissioner for Commerce, for suspected theft of monies provided for the Ramadan Iftar Feeding Program in the Babura local government area of the state.
This was stated in a press release signed by Malam Bala Ibrahim, Secretary to the State Government, and made available to journalists in Dutse. According to the announcement, the suspension is effective immediately until the investigative committee appointed by the state governor to look into the claim is determined.
The state governor’s move, according to the statement, is a part of his attempts to guarantee financial accountability and wise use of public funds.
Recall that the state executive council had authorized the distribution of N2.8 billion for iftar meals during Ramadan among the state’s 27 local government units. A minimum of 300 individuals are fed daily at each of the 600 centers that were built as part of the program, including some designated centers at all state higher education institutions and at least two feeding centers in each political ward. These centers are open during the month of Ramadan.
