Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has pardoned 33 inmates from the state’s various correctional facilities as part of events commemorating this year’s Ramadan fast.
Alhassan Sule Mamudo, the Yobe State Ministry of Justice’s Information Officer, confirmed this in a statement released to journalists in Damaturu on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the governor pardoned the detainees based on the recommendation of the Yobe State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which is directed by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Saleh Samanja.
“Prior to the detainees’ release, the Advisory Council paid visits to Potiskum, Nguru, and Gashu’a Correctional Services to seek pardons. The Attorney General stated that they visited all of the state’s jail facilities to determine who is eligible for the executive pardon.
“After careful deliberations, the advisory council came up with a 33-man list of inmates for consideration by His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni, the Executive Governor of Yobe State, whom he graciously accepted and approved their release for them to enjoy freedom through the executive order vested on His Excellency,” Samanja said in a statement.
According to the announcement, on the eve of Ramadan, Governor Mai Mala Buni sanctioned the delivery of food palliatives to all correctional facilities across the state for inmates to also enjoy the bounty of the Ramadan season.
