Jeffery Shaun King and his wife Rai King have converted to Islam on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan in United States (US).
Meanwhile, the two pronounced a testament of faith, known as Shahadah, over Instagram live under the guidance of King’s friend for over 10 years — United States Muslim scholar Omar Suleiman on Monday.
After reciting the shahadah in Arabic and English in front of other followers, King can be seen passing the microphone to his wife Rai, wearing a brown hijab, who also takes the oath. King linked his decision to convert to Malcom X’s heritage and to his longtime friendships with Muslims, but also to the humanitarian situation in Gaza, report said.
King said, “It has touched me in the most profound ways to see people right now in the most dangerous, traumatic place on the planet still be able to sometimes look at nothing but rubble and the remains of their family, and still see meaning and purpose in life.”
“Their faith and their devotion to Islam has not only opened my heart but has opened the hearts of millions of people around the world,” he continued.
King added: “Something truly beautiful happened that I took as a sign from God. Nobody in my world is surprised about me making this decision. Many thought I had already converted.
“But my wife’s decision, which came with absolutely zero pressure from me, shocked all of us. I was advised privately to let God work on her heart instead of it being me. And I kid you not, Dr. Rai came to this conclusion on her own. She found one of my Quran’s and simply began reading it, and her mind and heart were opened very quickly. Mind you, she has been a lifelong Christian and has her doctorate from Vanderbilt – she’s not easily swayed.
“But in a month’s time, she was ready to convert/revert as well and we decided together that we would make the decision before Ramadan.
“Her decision inspired me to be fully confident in my own.”
Born September 17, 1979, King uses social media to promote causes of social justice, particularly Black Lives Matter in the United States. He had a following of more than 5 million users before his account on the Meta-owned platform was removed on Christmas Eve.
