The House of Representatives has undertaken the initiation of measures aimed at reassessing the financial requirements for prospective pilgrims intending to participate in the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage.
This initiative stems from the adoption of a motion put forward by Rep. Umar Shehu-Ajilo (PDP-Kaduna) during the plenary session held in Abuja on Thursday.
Shehu-Ajilo highlighted the significance of the Hajj pilgrimage as a fundamental aspect of the Islamic faith, involving visits to revered sites such as the Holy Mosques and other historical landmarks within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Despite acknowledging its importance, the lawmaker expressed apprehension regarding the fixed cost of N5 million for the 2024 Hajj, considering it exorbitant for many prospective pilgrims, particularly those belonging to the middle and lower income brackets.
“In light of the current economic conditions, it has become imperative to scrutinize the methodologies and protocols employed by the National Hajj Commission in determining this year’s fare, to render it accessible to a broader spectrum of Nigerians aspiring to undertake this religious obligation,” he remarked.
In response, the House endorsed the motion, urging the Federal Government to intervene by providing subsidies for the 2024 Hajj fare, thereby facilitating the participation of individuals with average incomes in this sacred journey. Additionally, it mandated its Committee on Muslim Pilgrimage to engage with the National Hajj Commission to delve into the intricacies of the matter and propose viable solutions.
