Nigerian Muslim Student Dies 24 Hours after Arriving in UK for Postgraduate Studies

”Life and death are believed by Muslims to be in accord with the will of Allah – the timing of death is therefore predetermined with a fixed term for each human being. Death marks the passing to the Hereafter – the ultimate destination.” On January 16, 2024, Saheed Wahab, a Nigerian man enrolled in Teesside University’s master’s program, is said to have died the day after he arrived in the United Kingdom (UK).

Meanwhile, the Nigerians in the UK Community acknowledged the unfortunate incident and shared it on the group’s official X (formerly Twitter) profile.

Wahab, an Ilorin, Kwara State indigene, was in the UK to begin an MSc program, but sadly, he passed away in Teesside on Tuesday, January 16, in the afternoon.

Teesside University is a public university with its main campus in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire in North East England.

But after hearing the tragic news of Mr. Saheed Wahab’s passing, the Muslim community in the UK contacted his wife and other family members in Nigeria, and they were granted permission to act on their behalf and plan his funeral services in the UK, where he has since been buried.

“Allah takes the souls at the time of their death.” 39:42, Holy Quran

Indeed, no one knows exactly when he will die , or in what land he will die. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, Allah! With Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things).” [Luqman 31:34]
