Emergence of New Baba Adinni in Lagos

In Yorubaland Baba Adinni is a chiefly title. It is often conferred by local obas, usually to Muslim men who have contributed to society or government in some fashion. The coveted position of the 14th Baba Adinni of Lagos Central Mosque has been officially ascertained through a keenly contested election that took place at the venerable Lagos Central Mosque situated in Idumota.

Alhaji Sikiru Alabi-Macfoy, who currently holds the esteemed positions of Executive Vice Chairman of Lagos Central Mosque and Bashorun of Lagos, emerged triumphantly as the chosen candidate for Baba Adinni of Lagos Central Mosque after undergoing a meticulous screening process orchestrated by a 30-man Screening and Election Committee. This committee, expertly chaired by Alhaji Fatai Dawodu, a distinguished member of the Executive Council of the Lagos Central Mosque, conducted a comprehensive examination of the candidates.

The election, which saw the participation of three individuals expressing interest in the position, witnessed the presence of only two candidates during the screening—Alhaji Alabi-Macfoy and Alhaji Jelili Animashaun, the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Al-Hujjaj International Umrah and Hajj Services Ltd. The screening process subjected the candidates to rigorous questioning for an extended duration before the committee members proceeded to cast their votes.

In this closely contested election, Alhaji Alabi-Macfoy emerged victorious by securing a substantial 22 votes, while Alhaji Animashaun garnered eight votes. This electoral outcome solidifies Chief Alabi-Macfroy’s position as the rightful successor to Sheikh AbdulHafeez Abou, who peacefully departed from this world on January 9, leaving behind a legacy at the age of 101.

According to the history of Lagos Muslim Community, Pa Arunmonikun was first Baba Adinni of Lagos between 1841 and 1891. Others were Pa Shitta-Bey between 1891 and 1895; Pa Yesufu Alufa Shitta (1895-1911); Pa Apatira (1911); Pa Tiamiyu Savage (Bashorun Olowogbowo) 1911-1919; Imam Adam Ali Fayati (1919-1924); Imam Abass Opere (1924-1937); Pa Bombata And Pa Akinyemi (up to 1967); Alhaji Waheed Elias (1967-1976) and Alhaj Wahab Folawiyo (1976-2008).
