The investigation into the explosion that occurred in Ibadan last week has escalated with National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu taking charge.
The Oyo State government is spearheading the ongoing investigation and forensic analysis. Ribadu is set to visit the blast site in Bodija today for an on-the-spot assessment and to receive a direct briefing from the state government and its investigators. This visit will aid Ribadu in determining how the Office of the NSA will collaborate with them.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake is also expected in Ibadan today. The involvement of Ribadu and Alake comes after Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Olukayode Ariwoola visited the scene over the weekend and expressed shock at the devastation.
Earlier, President Bola Tinubu expressed condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde and the victims. The Federal Government is awaiting the outcome of forensic investigations to determine the cause of the blast and appropriate measures to prevent a recurrence. As of now, 90% of the 77 injured victims have been discharged, and an integrity test is being conducted on about 230 buildings around the explosion site. Governor Makinde commended residents for their cooperation and thanked security agencies for maintaining law and order.
He assured support for all victims and pledged that those responsible would be held accountable. The Bodija Estate Residents Association plans to open a register for members to list their losses, aiding the government in providing support.
Also, the Former Deputy Governor Iyiola Oladokun, chairman of the association, emphasized the need for collective efforts and dismissed false allegations against a resident, Mr. Camara.
Additionally, APC chieftain Chief Niyi Akintola called for the devolution of powers to state and local governments, particularly in solid minerals management and exploration, citing the magnitude of the disaster in Ibadan.
