Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, articulated a profound emphasis on the pivotal role of equity, justice, and fairness as quintessential elements in the landscape of democratic governance.
This assertion transpired during his keynote address at the Annual General Assembly of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), held at the J.F. Ajayi Main Auditorium, University of Lagos, Akoka-Lagos. The deputy governor expounded on the notion that these principles stand as foundational pillars upon which the edifice of a nation is constructed.
In his eloquent discourse, Hamzat elucidated that equity, justice, and fairness serve as critical components that demand the collective focus of society if citizens are to coexist harmoniously, fostering tolerance and unity. He commended MUSWEN for its foresight in selecting the theme, “Rebuilding National Unity and Understanding: The Quest for Equity, Justice, and Fairness in a Multi-Religious Society,” considering it of paramount national importance. The deputy governor lauded faith-based organizations such as MUSWEN, acknowledging their unique position to proffer solutions to seemingly intractable national challenges.
Hamzat expressed optimism that the continuous engagement of organizations like MUSWEN in addressing national challenges would inevitably result in paradigm shifts, offering substantial benefits to the nation. He underscored the crucial role of religion as a potent force for unity when properly managed. However, he posed a contemplative query, pondering whether religion has served as a bane or a benefit to a multi-religious society deeply rooted in religious convictions.
Acknowledging the influence wielded by religious leaders, Hamzat urged them to leverage their positions to douse tensions, asserting that they possess not only the clout to influence but also the responsibility to address national malaises. He emphasized the need for religious leaders to ensure that their sermons delve into the application of religious tenets to national life, providing insightful reflections on key realities. Hamzat urged religious leaders to speak truth to the government, leveraging their privileged access to the corridors of power.
Furthermore, Ogun State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Noimot Salako Oyedele, added her commendation to MUSWEN’s efforts in propagating the ideals of Islam. She passionately urged Muslim faithful to actively engage in political activities as a means to wield influence and effect positive change, emphasizing that power is not served a la carte.
In a prelude to the aforementioned addresses, the President of MUSWEN, Alhaji Rasaq Oladejo, expressed elation over the unwavering commitment exhibited by members of MUSWEN, particularly the executive members, whom he praised for their unalloyed and total dedication. Alhaji Oladejo exuded confidence in the group’s ability to achieve its set goals as envisioned by the founding fathers of the association. He took the opportunity to highlight the achievements and anticipated objectives of his administration, urging members to uphold fidelity to their financial obligations, notwithstanding the prevailing economic challenges in the country.
