The origin of Eid Al Adha was from Prophet Ibrahim and his son, Ismail. It should be noted that Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail were responsible for erecting the holy Ka’ba in Makkah.
Contrary to the wide spread misinformation that owing to Prophet Ibrahim’s emulous desire to bear a child, he promised Allah that if he bears a son, he would sacrifice the child to please Allah. The holy Quran clarifies this wrongly held misconception. Almighty Allah (SWT) prohibits killing an innocent person. Allah (SWT) doesn’t need the blood of any human being or animal. In Suratul Al Hajj—Quran 22:37, Allah (SWT) says, “It is neither their flesh nor blood that reaches Allah, but it is your righteousness that reaches Him”.
According to the holy Quran, Prophet Ibrahim actually saw himself slaughtering his son, Ismail, in his dream. Surah Saffat, Quran 37: 102.
The dreams of the prophets are not like that of ordinary people. The dreams of the prophets are “Wayu (message from Allah)” which must come to pass. A true vision (Sahih Bukhari).
Prophet Ibrahim understood clearly his dream, and due to his unwavering faith he was ready to actualise his dream. This was indeed a great test of faith.
He told Ismail about his dream, (Surah Saffat Quran 37:102)— “And when he reached with him (the age of) exertion, he said, “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I (must) sacrifice you, so see what you think”. He said, “O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast”.
As an obedient and well-trained child, Ismail agreed with his father, replying with words showing absolute humility and obedience to his father’s decision.
While trying to slaughter Ismail, the sharp knife couldn’t cut as a result of Allah’s permission. The strong determination demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim to fulfill Allah’s command (SWT) made him passed his test.
Due to Allah’s mercy, a ram replaced his son—Surah Saffat-Quran 37:107-108—“And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice”.
Almighty Allah (SWT) turned this to a tradition for all coming generations of Muslims. And since then, Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid Al Adha as a lesson that unwavering faith is required to succeed in the sight of Allah— Quran 29: 2—“Do people think that they will be left alone because they say, “We believe, and will not be tested”.
May Allah (SWT) strengthen our faith. Ameen.
