President Bola Tinubu has been urged by the Young Professionals Council of the All Progressives Congress to “embark on immediate palliative measures to reduce the effect of the subsidy removal on the citizens.”
Hon. Fatai Abiodun, the group’s director general, urged the APC in a statement to communicate in clear terms to the citizens in language they will understand the need for the removal of the subsidy which is for the greater good of the country and roll out immediate measure to ameliorate the suffering that would come with such important decision.
He said, “The APC- Young Professionals Council, as a party’s support group founded solely to help in strengthening the party by guiding and providing professional solutions to the challenges facing the nation and promoting the progressive agenda of the Party, urged Mr. President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu to liaise with the State Governors on the need to increase the minimum wage across the board in line with the 40 per cent increment approved by the immediate administration to reflect the current reality.”
The council expressed trust in Tinubu’s abilities to improve living conditions for the public through the renewed hope agenda while urging Nigerians to give the government the benefit of the doubt over the subsidy saga.
“There is no orientation we can give to anyone that is hungry. The Payment of N30k as minimum wage is no longer in tandem with the current realities. Many Civil Servants and Private Employees would not be able to survive under the increment of transportation and goods and services. There must be reasonability with the amount of minimum wage.
“Other Oil producing nations who are not subsidizing their oil are not paying N30,000.00 as Minimum wage. We must be sincere to tell the Party and the Government the truth,” Abiodun added.
FG Meets with NLC, Others
Meanwhile, the Nigerian president, who is yet to constitute his cabinet, has kick started negotiation with Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC over his planned removal of fuel subsidy. However, the meeting between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress -NLC over fuel subsidy removal has ended without a consensus. According to report, the hours-long meeting was to, among other things, prevent a labour crisis following the recent increase in petrol pump price occasioned by the discontinuance of petroleum subsidy.
The meeting which began at about 4pm at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, had the the spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu; Dele Alake, NNPC boss, Mele Kyari, CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele; and former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, representing the Federal government. The organised labour was represented by the NLC National President, Joe Ajaero; and the President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Festus Osifo.
After the meeting, the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, faulted the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited over an official release, reviewing the petrol pump price in its filling stations nationwide. Adding that the move puts the labour unions in a difficult position on the negotiation table. The meeting between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) over the crisis resulting from the fuel subsidy removal has ended in a deadlock.
Also, the NLC demanded that the Federal Government return to the status quo by reversing the price of fuel before resuming negotiations with the NLC. Ajaero said that the NLC has to protect the Nigerian workforce and proffer additional solutions.
In addition, the presidential spokesperson, Dele Alake, said the meeting was ‘’robust”. He added that talks between both parties continues and that the Federal government is hopeful that a reasonable consensus will soon be reached.
