Buhari Approves the Return of Obalende Eid Praying Ground to Lagos Muslim Community

President Muhammad Buhari approved the report of a Special Committee he established to investigate and report to him the issues in conflict between the Lagos Muslim Community on the one hand and Federal Government Agencies, particularly those stationed at the Dodan Barracks, in one of his final acts as the sitting president of Nigeria.

The Obalende Eid Prayer Ground legally belongs to the Jama’atul Muslimeen Community, and President Buhari instructed all federal government agencies to “recognize and respect the fact that the Obalende Eid Prayer Ground legally belongs to the Jama’atul Muslimeen Community.” President Buhari gave his approval to the report of a Special Committee he established to investigate and report to him the issues in conflict between the Lagos Muslim Community on the one hand and those stationed at the Dodan Barracks regarding the management.

The President reportedly ordered that the “desecration of the Obalende Eid Prayer Ground by its profane use as a dump site should stop with immediate effect” and to that end, the Dodan Barracks authorities should remove all containers and debris from the prayer ground, according to a release issued on Sunday by presidential spokesman Malam Garba Shehu.

The Dodan Barracks authorities were also told by President Buhari to “ensure that the Muslim Communities and their agents have unrestricted access to the Obalende Eid Prayer Ground at all times.”

Finally, he recommended to the Lagos State Government that “if deemed fit, (to) grant the Jama’atal Muslimeen Council a Certificate of Occupancy over the area identified in the Survey Plan.”

The Minister of Works and Housing, the Minister of Defense, the Director-General of the DSS, the Chief of Defence Staff, and the Permanent Secretary of State House were all members of the committee that carried out the task as instructed by the President, which was chaired by Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the Chief of Staff.
