When a baby is born, he is totally unaware of the outside world. The mother plays an important part in introducing him to the world. The outlook that the child will form towards life depends a lot on the mother. His attitude, his views – religious or otherwise- his perspective on life and its goals, will all be gained from her. Eventually he will mature and perhaps form his own changed views, but the initial years and what he learns in them will always have a lasting impression on his mind.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, who among the people is most deserving of my good companionship?’ He said, ‘Your mother.’ The man asked, ‘Then who?’ He said, ‘Your mother.’ He asked, Then who?’ He said, ‘Your mother.’ He asked, ‘Then who?’ He said, ‘Your father.’”
She is the one who made her womb a vessel for you and nourished you from her breast. You have no option but to love her. The fitrah (natural inclination of man) calls you to love her. Love between mothers and children and children and mothers is something that Allah has instilled even in animals, so it is even more befitting for the children of human beings, and for Muslims in particular.
Prophet (saw) said, ‘Paradise lies at the feet of your mother.’
I came to the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I want to perform Jihad in the way of Allah. He asked, “Is your mother alive?” I replied, “Yes.” The Prophet then said: “Cling to her feet, because paradise is there.”
Clinging to your mother’s feet does not imply lying at her feet all of the time, but rather recognising where it is so you may act accordingly. Honour your mothers by serving them as they like. Serving your mother means not just providing financial security for her, but also obeying her, treating her with respect and humility, praying for her well-being in this world and in the next, speaking politely with her, and keeping her happy, among other things.

A mother’s role in Islam is monumental. A bond between a mother and a child is no doubt the most cherished and forms the basis of all life. Islam has raised the status of mothers to the highest level and serving your mother is not only an act of kindness but is also rewarded in Jannah. A mother goes through infinite struggles to give birth to a child. She not only nurses her child in her womb for nine months but takes the responsibility of the child’s upbringing on her shoulders. It is true when it is said that an expecting woman’s body can dissolve her bones to feed the fetus in her womb. Subhan Allah!
