The recent attack of Muslims at Idi Omo Mosque, Ilare, Ile-Ife, Osun State by some members of the Oro worshippers on the Muslim community is a blatant affront to peace, dignity and humanity, says Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria B-Zone. In the meantime, members of the Muslim community in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Friday, staged a protest following the alleged invasion of a mosque in the Ilare area by some Oro adherents.
In Ile-Ife, members of the Muslim community in Ile-Ife, Osun State, staged a protest on Friday. “The traditionalists entered the mosque, where some Muslims had gathered to observe the 4pm prayers, and attacked those they found in the building,” a protester told Punch Newspapers.
According to Punch Newspapers, beside the chief imam of the mosque, Abdul-Lateef Adediran, who was reportedly injured in the face, five other worshippers were allegedly stabbed during the attack.
“We were aware that they would be going around with Oro and we didn’t meddle in their affairs. They had passed through the area. They later returned and entered the mosque.
“The imam was trying to ask what their mission was, but they didn’t even allow him to talk before they started beating every one of us. Six people were stabbed. Our imam sustained injuries on his face. All those injured were taken to hospitals in Ile-Ife.”
Oro Worshippers’ Attack On Muslims: An Affront To Peace- MSSN B-Zone
The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria B-Zone is deeply saddened by the recent attack of Muslims at Idi Omo Mosque, Ilare, Ile-Ife by some members of the Oro worshippers while they were at the Ramadan Tafsir. This attack on the Muslim community is a blatant affront to peace, dignity and humanity. It is unacceptable and unjustifiable that any group of people would unleash terror and violence on innocent citizens for their belief, according to a statement signed by Barrister Qaasim Odedeji Amir, MSSN B-ZONE, Alhaji Abdul-Jalil Abdur-Razaq Secretary, MSSN B-ZONE and Brother Moshood Tahir PRO, MSSN B-ZONE on 4th April, 2023 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The statement said, “We hereby express our condemnation and indignation over this attack on Muslims by the Oro worshipers, where several members of the Muslim Community including the Imam were severely injured thereby devastating and traumatizing their families. This gross violation of the rights to life, liberty, and security of Muslims would not be tolerated at all.
“We hereby call on the State Government and the Security agencies in Osun state to, as a matter of urgency, initiate investigation into this incidence and take decisive action to bring all the perpetrators of this dastardly act to book. We will not accept any attempts to sweep this matter under the carpet or shield those responsible from facing the full wrath of the law.
“We urge the state government to work closely with relevant stakeholders to find a permanent solution to the issue of Oro worshippers and other cultural practices that threaten the peace and security of the state. We also call on all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community leaders, to work together to promote peace and harmony in the state. We believe that everyone has a role to play in fostering peace, unity, and understanding among different religious and ethnic groups in the state.
“Furthermore, we urge all members of the Muslim community to remain calm and peaceful in the face of this provocation. We must resist the temptation to take matters into our own hands and instead work towards ensuring that justice is done through lawful means.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the victims of this tragedy, and we stand in solidarity with all those affected by this senseless act of violence and the Muslim community in Ilare, Ile-Ife and across the state. We want to assure you that we will not be intimidated or cowed by the actions of a few misguided individuals who seek to sow discord and division amongst us.
“In conclusion, we appeal to the state government and all the other stakeholders to do everything within their power to restore peace and harmony in the state. We cannot afford to allow religious or ethnic differences to divide us or escalate into violence. Let us all work together towards a peaceful and prosperous future for our state,” it added.
