Sheikh Shuraim bids farewell to Masjid Al Haram, After 32 Years of Service


Sheikh Shuraim (Sheikh Shuraim Saud ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Shuraim) [سعود بن ابراهيم بن محمد الشريم] born in Riyadh in January 1966 (1386 H), Saud Al-Shuraim is a name to reckon given his outstanding education pertaining to Islamic Sciences and Qur’an recitation. He has an honorary Doctorate from the Umm Al Qura University in Makkah.

Having graduated from the renowned University of AAl-Imam Mohamed Ibn Saud under able and distinguished Shaykhs like Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Baz, Abdallah Al Jabreen, Abdallah Ben Okail, Abderrahmane El Berrak, and Abdelaziz Errajhi, it is not a matter of surprise and astonishment that he was designated as the Imam and Priest (Khatib) of Masjid Al Haram by the King of Saudi Arabia which he does effortlessly albeit with other stalwarts of the same discipline namely Sheikh Sudais and Sheikh Maher Al Muaiqly.

Saud Ash Shuraim was nominated in 1992 by the King of Saudi Arabia Imam and Priest (Khatib) of the Holy Mosque. He was also appointed as a judge in the Saudian High Court.

Also, Sheikh Shuraim was Imam and Khateeb of Masjid Al Haram for 32 years when he retired after leading his final Prayer in Masjid Al Haram, Makkah on 12 Rabi Al Awwal 1443. Known as one of the most recognizable Qa’rees of modern times, the Imam’s absence will leave the House of Allah without a familiar voice.

Unexpectedly, the Imam excused to re-new his contract with the General Presidency in latter months of 2022 citing personal reasons. The Imam can however return in a temporary role to lead Taraweeh Prayers which will be confirmed in due course ahead of Ramadan.

However, months of speculation ended on Wednesday evening when the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques confirmed through the release of the annual Taraweeh Schedule ahead of Ramadan that Sheikh Saud Ash Shuraim has retired.

Meanwhile, he is also a cousin of fellow Imam and Khateeb Sheikh Sudais, both of whom are from related tribes (family). Furthermore, Sheikh Saud Shuraim has written many books on Islamic Fiqh and Aqeedah, and poetry. In addition, Imam Sheikh Saud Al Shuraim married only once as he has only one wife. He believes that his wife is proved to be his best companion.
