An advocacy group, Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative, stated in an open letter signed by the director general, Barrister Sulaymon A. Tadese, on Wednesday that the organization has made it imperative for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strictly adhere to the rights of Muslim Women in Purdah by providing enough and adequate female officials of the commission at Polling Units across the Federation.
Sulaymon added, “This is very important owing to the fact that failure by the BIVAS device to recognize the fingerprints of the women in question do require their facial capturing, of which there would necessarily be need for female officials to undertake a facial capturing of these women.
“It is important to remind you that taking cognisance of this will further entrench the commitment of your commission to the supremacy of rule of law and freedom of religion as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 amended.”
Also, protecting the rights of Muslim women in veil as persons who by reason of their religious inclination in the Islamic fold could not be freely engaged with officials of the INEC who are of the opposite sex and these will as well be an avenue to achieve your goals of a free, fair and credible elections.
According to Dawah Institute of research and Islamic propagation department of the Islamic Education Trust (IET), Purdah is an Indian word which is sometimes translated as “seclusion”. It refers to the practice of some Muslim women of staying at home so as to avoid mixing with men, other than the husband, family members and close friends.
