Jumu’ah Post: Family’s Significance in Man’s Affair
Bonds are placed among the living creatures of Allah and this situation is what brings about different relationships among one another. Diversity of such bond is vast and depending on the type that exists among specific set of people, it comes with different levels of engagement, commitment and responsibility.
Man’s family of his own specific origin of birth and that of his initiated procreation, upon which a very high degree of bond and responsibility exists, holds a high magnitude of significance and relevance to his life. The commitment to such a unit of one’s existence, in every affordable manner of pleasurable endeavor, can never be over emphasized. The Holy Qur’an says, “And be careful of [your duty to] God in whose name you demand [your rights] from one another, and [to] the ties of relationship; surely God is ever watchful over you!” (4:1).
The islamically enshrined injunctions on ties maintenance with family is such that failure to honour such injunctions – severing of family ties – attracts divine sanction from Allah.
Relationship with family is an activity that has been prescribed to be related or associated with The Almighty and nothing relates to Allah, except that it is carried out in the best possible way and that is the most beneficial for its performers.
Regarding the above verse, the descendant and successor of Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ), Imam Jafar As-Sadiq, was asked about this verse. He said “It means the family relationship. Surely, God, The Most-High has ordered it to be regarded and has magnified it. Do you not observe that He has mentioned it with Himself.” Self procreated family transcends beyond one’s offspring, to the inclusion of the wife(ves) and the Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) made us realize how highly esteemed they are, when he said “the best among you, are those who are best to their wives.”
With every divine obligations and encouraged acts comes benefits and the family ties maintenance is not an exception to this fact, because keeping kinsfolk ties are channels to the mercy of Allah. The Holy Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said: “He who wishes that his sustenance be increased for him and his death day be delayed, then he should pay attention to his kinsfolk.”
Regardless of the bond nature that exists, fellow Muslims are considered brethrens and such a family tie even supersedes – not meaning to downplay the bond of one’s specific family – other forms of family tie. The obligation of the dues, or rights, to be paid to every member of these units have to be fulfilled among them equally so as to gain both worldly benefits and those of the hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) strengthen us to be a spreader of unity and tranquility among the Ummah, and grant us our intended ultimate goal of Jannah, Aameen.
