Mitigating errors in Yoruba Nikahs

Because Nikahs are usually a multi family event, and given the Yoruba family -near and extended- is usually filled with all types of irreligious people, young Muslim couples face a lot in organising Nikah ceremonies free of the categorically prohibited.

Here’s some of what I think you can do to at least mitigate if not eliminate these issues:

1. Have a parlour ceremony, whether you’re separating the Aqd and walimah or combining them. The smaller the people the easier it is to control them.

2. Resolve all contentious issues before the DAY. Resolving fiqh and aqeedah issues on Nikah is an embarrassment even if you ultimately won.

3. Choose the M.C and the officiating Imams. These are the pillars of the event.
If you cannot choose, try to see those who have been saddled with the event and have a discussion with them. It is not easy teaching officiating Imams how to do the aqd on the day of Nikah.

4. Try to control the environment:

a. Arrange the chairs to reflect gender segregation.

b. Control the D.J. and give him a collected list of Anasheed you want. This is very important, the guy at the sound system can make or mar your occasion.

5. Do not allow the consumption of alcohol totally. Any mad person that insists on drinking should drink it outside of the premises.

There may be other stuff you can do, but these ones come to mind.
