The Federal High Court Abuja had ruled that face veil (Niqob) for Muslim women has no basis to be banned by the University authority of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) and that such law is outside the scope of Fundamental Human Rights as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Hon. Justice O.O. Oguntoyinbo, the presiding judge, noted that there was no outright ban by the University Management and the fact that such ban was contained in a bill board at the University entrance does not make it a legal ban.
The Judgement which was resolved in favour of the respondent reinstated that the University may make other means of identifying veiled Women for security purpose as it claimed and not by banning any veiled woman in the University premises.
Director General of the Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative, THURIST-Nigeria Barr. Sulaymon A. Tadese said, “We are glad that the court had pronounced and laid to rest the long time Niqob ban in the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta.
“We equally urge the University authority to maintain the status quo mapped out by the Federal High Court on this matter,” he added.
