HIJAB: Oyo Muslim Students’ Applauds First Technical University Leadership, Others on Dress Code Controversy

Mallam Engr. Abdulkabir Al’Yakeen Amir, who signed the statement on November 7, 2022 for the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Oyo State Area Unit, said: “On the 28th of October, 2022, the leadership of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Oyo State Area Unit through the office of the Directorate of Higher Institution Coordination received an incident report of a sister by the name Aleem Aisha who was allegedly denied the opportunity to get herself registered as a newly admitted student of the First Technical University, Ibadan, Oyo State. What was said to be her offence is the use of the Niqab (Veil) by the said Sister.

“The Higher Institution Coordinator, Bro. Moshood Alim swung into action immediately and reached out to stakeholders for their intervention and today, we can confirm to you that the sister has been registered without having to remove her veil.

“We must at this juncture appreciate some eminent personalities for their timely and proactive intervention. From the Government of Oyo State, we appreciate the Special Adviser to the Governor on Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Imam AbdRasheed AbdulAzeez who had been exemplary in standing for Islamic Rights. We also appreciate the Management of the First Technical University under the able leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adesola Ajayi, and the Imam of the University.

“We also appreciate the leadership of Oyo State Muslim Community, especially Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sanni, Sheik Isa Akindele, Dr. Dawud Amoo Alaga and the entire leadership of Concerned Muslim Group, we ask Allah to preserve you all on goodness.

“We must reiterate that the First Technical University has done nothing special for the MSSN, rather they have made the University proud by standing for Justice, equity and fairness especially in protecting the right of Muslim Students. What the leadership of the University had done through dialogue had in some quarters been subjected to judicial battle even up to the Supreme Court. Hence, we are deeply glad for this kind gesture.

“Lastly, we enjoin defaulting institutions who are hell-bent on depriving the Muslims of their rights as entrenched in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and upheld by the apex court to retrace their steps and take the Technical University as a worthy example. However, if they are still adamant on their stance, they should know well that they’ll be meeting their waterloo soonest.”

Recall that Supreme Court of Nigeria has granted the use of hijab by female Muslim students in Lagos State Government-owned schools. The apex court delivered the ruling upholding the use of hijab by Muslim students in June. This is a giant stride in support of constitutional rights of freedom of worship as enshrined in the Nigeria constitution and also followed the injunction on Islamic modesty for female Muslims as contained in the Holy Qur’an:24vs 30-31.
