Senate Approves Dr. Suleman Afikpo As NAHCON Southeast Commissioner


The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Suleman Agha Afikpo as a commissioner representing the southeastern part of the country at National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

On Wednesday, October 5, the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, led by Senator Bulkachuwa Adamu, approved the appointment of Dr. Suleman, an Ebonyi State native.

According to information obtained by The Muslim Voice, Dr. Suleman would succeed Alhaji Ibrahim Ogbonnia Amah, the previous commissioner who died last year. Recall that Alhaji Amah passed away on November 30, 2021, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Before his appointment, Afikpo served as Director of the Abuja-based NGO Global Islamic Research Institute. He is a consultant for Islamic education as well as a researcher, teacher, and professional course developer. The new commissioner can communicate in Arabic, English, Igbo, and Hausa.

He has served in a variety of leadership positions, including those of Chairman of the Igbo Muslim Forum in Uwani, Enugu, Chairman of the South-East Muslim Organization of Nigeria (SEMON), General Secretary of the Ebonyi State Muslim Community, and Coordinator General of the Igbo Muslim Forum, among others.

Additionally, Dr. Suleman has participated in NAHCON’s Hajj Feeding Committee.

His educational credentials include a Bachelor of Arts in History and Civilizations from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Maximize Educational Consults in London, and a Master of Islamic Studies from The Muslim College in London.

Suleman, a PhD student in the College of Arts and Sciences at Universiti Utara Malaysia, has participated in a number of conferences and seminars and written books and articles.
