About 12 million Uyghurs, the majority of whom are Muslims, reside in Xinjiang, also known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).

Han Chinese, the ethnic majority in China, have reportedly been migrating in large numbers into Xinjiang over the past few decades in an effort to swell the region’s minority population.

Human rights organizations assert that over the past few years, China has imprisoned hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs and held more than one million of them against their will in a vast network of facilities it refers to as “re-education camps.”

In addition to the detentions, Uyghurs in the area have experienced additional rights violations include strict surveillance, forced labor, and coerced sterilizations.
