Education is a key factor in driving development and one of the most effective tools for eradicating poverty and promoting peace, and stability.
Nevertheless, some 260 million children are still out of primary and secondary school. Nigeria now has about 20 million out-of-school children, according to the latest global data on out-of-school children by the NYSC
The population of Katsina State, a state in Nigeria’s northwest geopolitical zone, was 5,801,584 as of the 2006 Census, or 43% of the country’s total population. According to authorities, the state had the second-highest percentage of out-of-school children in Nigeria in 2021. If just one kid skips class, let alone the millions of kids we’re talking about in Nigeria, there is plenty to fear. “There is much to fear if a single child is out of school not to talk about the millions of children that we are talking about in Nigeria,” said Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, Former Minister of State for Education of Nigeria.
One of the National Youth Service Corps’ (NYSC) four cardinal programs is the Community Development Service (CDS). By engaging in creative problem-solving, this was organized to support and develop young people. similar to how corpers are permitted to conduct a personal CDS.
In Kastina State, NYSC Corps member Rodiya Shonibare posts on social media about her own Community Development Service (CDS) project named “Dress A Child.”
She said, “I observed that 70% of pupils attending government and community schools in Katsina Local Government, Katsina, dress shabbily to school. This inspired the initiative of embarking on this project titled “Dress A Child.”
Ikorodu- Lagos born Rodiya spoke about the idea and stated: The “Dress A Child” project entails the distribution of free school uniforms, socks and sandals to the less-privileged students in Dutsin Safe community, Katsina Local Government, Katsina. The rationale is that one of the ways to build a child’s confidence is to dress a child in a new school uniform and other essential clothing’s. Research has also proved that dressing is one of the ways to build confidence. This confidence that we seek in these pupils is to encourage them to perform better in their academics and make good results.”
On September 21, 2022, the project was launched at the Dutsin Safe Low-Cost and Environs Community Secondary School in Katsina Local Government, with 40 pupils in attendance.
The representative of the state coordinator, the zonal inspector, the head of the CDS, the local government inspector, and other NYSC officials from Katsina State are among the honorees of this occasion.
