The governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, officially opened a community school for advanced Islamic studies with 60 classrooms on Wednesday in the town of Biu.

Prior to today’s launching of the higher Islamic school, Zulum spent Tuesday night in Biu town.

The Higher Islamic school system allows students who have attained a particular degree of Quranic knowledge through traditional Islamiyas to transition into western education for diploma programs, and the diplomas they receive can help them gain entrance to universities and other tertiary institutions.

Before Zulum approved the construction of a completely new and much larger school from scratch, the commissioned school was started and run by community members in an old building.

Alhaji Mohammed “Young” Kidda, the owner of the school, received an N40 million check from Governor Zulum in addition to the school’s commissioning.

The State Government is providing N40m as help so that community-based management of the school can pay employee salaries over time.

Zulum pledged to continue the government’s funding of the school.

Engineer Lawan Abba Wakilbe, the commissioner for education, indicated that “the school will implement the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) curriculum”, and the “institution is expected to run the Junior Islamic Studies (JIS), Senior Islamic Studies (SIS) and a Diploma Programme”.

The sixty (60) classroom mega school, according to Wakilbe, contains six offices, three staff common rooms, 1,200 student desks, and a white board with a marker for teaching in each of the 60 classrooms.

The school, which is (obviously) fully enclosed, planted, and flower-adorned, has been connected to the national grid for power supply and has water supply facilities with 13 washrooms, according to the commission.

Wakilbe noted that the sixty (60) classroom mega school has six offices, three staff common room, and is equipped with 1,200 students’ desks, while each of 60 classrooms has a chair and table for teachers and white marker board to aid teaching.

Governor provides 200 bicycles and 200 books to students

After commissioning, Governor Zulum formally began distributing textbooks for advanced Islamic studies to the community school.

Additionally, 200 bicycles were given out by the governor to students who reportedly travel three to five kilometers “from Mzita community in Dueja ward of Biu Local Government Area to attend Tum primary school,” which is located outside of their homes.

Zulum, according to the commissioner, authorised the distribution of bicycles “to every pupil in that community” and “we have identified 200 pupils” to benefit today.
