A newly constructed ultramodern mosque named As-Sujood, has been commissioned by the Muslim community of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) under the Chief Imam of the University, Dr Abdul Hakeem Akanni. OOU is a state university located in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun state, South Western Nigeria. The university was founded in 1982.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde, thanked Mrs. Tamramat Mosun Bello-Olusoga for her persistent donation before and prayed to God to bless her. He also lauded her commitment, dedication and exemplary leadership while she served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council of the University.
OOU Muslim Community Chairman, Professor Mikail Lasun Gbadamosi appreciated the immediate past Pro-Chancellor for providing the befitting place of worship, calling the mosque “a touch of elegance.” He claimed that the new mosque had sparked a lot of excitement among the university’s Muslim population. He prayed to God to generously bless the giver. The building of a mosque, according to him, allows one to continue to affords a person to continue to earn the blessings of Almighty Allah, even after death.
“The design of the new mosque is one of the best in this sub-Saharan Africa,” Gbadamosi continued. The University Muslim Community is very happy with Alhaja Mosun Bello-Olusoga, our former Pro-Chancellor, for building this mosque and we also appreciate our Vice-Chancellor for facilitating it.
According to Gbadamosi, “we should contribute towards the emancipation of the Islamic religion and helping people to worship the Almighty Allah.” He urged Muslim Community members and well-meaning followers elsewhere to imitate Mrs. Bello-Olusoga in her generous giving to the sake of Allah.
Professor Gbadamosi revealed that only Friday congregational prayers would be held at the new mosque.
“The new mosque is a touch of elegance and we want to ensuse adequate maintenance. We plan to use it for Jumah service on Friday alone. For the daily prayers, we will be using the nearby smaller mosque,” he said.
The mosque was commissioned by Mrs. Mosunmola Bello-Olusoga today Yawmul Jumu’ah 5th of Safar 1444 AH (September 2, 2022). While the National Chief Imaam of the Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Shaykh Abdur Rahmaan Olanrewaju Ahmad, also gave the opening Friday Khutbah.
Shaykh Ahmad, in his sermon, urged the users of the new mosque to sustain the purpose of the mosque,which is to worship. Adding that, the Mosque is not meant only for solat; it is must be an educational centre, a place to dispense justice, a place for recreation, a place to rest from stress, a place of serenity, a reconciliation centre and a place to bring social justice and ethical orientation to the people.
A number of dignitaries attended the commissioning, including Senator Sefiu Adegbenga Kaka, The Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba AbdurRasaq Adenuga, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, President of Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), Chairman and Pro–Chancellor of Summit University/Vice President of MUSWEN, Alhaji Rafiu Ebiti, Alhaji Wale Sonaike, Alhaji Zikrullah Alimi, Alhaji Kamal Akintunde, Lekan Bello and OOU Vice Chancellor Prof. Ganiyu O. Olatunde.
Similarly, Alhaji S. Shuaib, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Ogun State, Professor Toyin Ashiru, the Pioneer Chief Imam and the first Emeritus Professor of OOU, Professor Kamaldeen Balogun, and Quwam Amubikaun, Ameer MSSN, OOU Ago-Iwoye among some notable attendees.
When Mrs. Mosunmola Bello-Olusoga, the previous Pro-Chancellor and chairman of council, turned the first sod for the construction of As-Sujood Mosque, the university’s new mosque at the Main Campus, it was a dream come true for the Muslim community at Olabisi Onabanjo University on Friday, July 30, 2021.
After being donated to the University Muslim Community by Mrs. Bello-Olusoga, whose term as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council ended in May of last year, the mosque project was slated for completion after 44 weeks.
