The Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria announced on Saturday, August 20, 2022, that three academic staff members from the Department of Biochemistry at the university have received scholarships from the Chinese government for the PhD program at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China.

The winners are Rabiatu Bako Suleiman, Muhammad Auwal Saliu, and Idris Zubairu Sadiq.
They are among the 20 applicants who were chosen for the Chinese Government Scholarship Silk Road Program for International Students’ awardee list for 2022. The applicants came from seven nations: Nigeria, Kenya, Yemen, Indonesia, Pakistan, Rwanda, and Ethiopia.

A letter was recently sent to Ahmadu Bello University by Mrs. Rui Wang, Secretary, Centre for Protein and Cell-Based Drugs, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), informing them of the release of the final PhD admission list and the awarding of scholarships to the three academic staff members.

Only three of the seven ABU students nominated by the SIAT for the program and the scholarship were admitted, according to Mrs. Wang, who described the admissions procedure as “lengthy and rigorous.”

“This year’s admissions competition was tough, and we wish to express our gratitude to all of the applicants for giving it their all,” she said.

The Secretary expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the entire administration of Ahmadu Bello University for initiating the partnership between ABU and the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and expressed the hope that it would continue to grow.

Recall that in December of last year, Ahmadu Bello University and Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences held a zoom meeting, which ultimately led to the three academic staff members receiving PhD admission and scholarships.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kabiru Bala presided over the ABU delegation at the Zoom meeting, which also featured Prof. Maryam Aminu, Prof. M.B. Mu’azu, and Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration.

The Vice-Chancellor thanked SIAT-CAS for the presentation on the “2022 SIAT International Student and Postdoc Program” and for asking ABU Management to apply for the posted available slots during the meeting.
