Sheikh Goni Aisami-Gashua, an Islamic scholar from Yobe, was assassinated at Jaji-Maji, the state’s Karasuwa local government council’s administrative center.
The Muslim Voice NG learned that John Gabreil, a Lance Corporal, attached to the Nigerian Army 241 Recce Battalion, Nguru, approached the scholar and asked for a free ride (lift) to Jaji-Maji. That while driving and before reaching Jaji-Maji town the assailant asked him to park that there was an unusual noise at the rear tyre. That when the cleric came down while checking the tyre, the suspect brought out his rifle, shot and killed him.

Residents of Gashua have reported that the incident took place about 10am in Jaji-Maji, which is not far from Gashua—the city where Senate President Ahmad Lawan was born and raised—by less than 30 kilometers. Mr. Gabriel and his accomplice, Adamu Gideon, a fellow soldier, are in police custody.
DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the state’s police spokesman, reported that “suspects wielding AK-47 rifles have been arrested and are in police custody.”
The arrested soldiers who were detained are thought to be a criminal team. According to sources, they assassinated the preacher after spotting what they believed to be money in the cleric’s car while he was driving back from Kano.

When the Scholar and the soldier arrived at the village of Chamaka on their journey, the soldier pulled out his gun and shot the Scholar three times.
The police spokesperson said after shooting the cleric, the soldier “dragged the body and hid it in the bush and took possession of the vehicle with the intention of taking it away but the vehicle refused to start after several attempts.”
He then called his accomplice, Adamu Gideon from the same military battalion and an auto-electrician from Jaji-Maji town to assist in starting the car for assistance, but the Scholar’s car wouldn’t start, so the villagers arrived.
The two soldiers were later detained and are now with the authority in Damaturu. The soldiers confessed that they killed the Scholar so they could flee with his car.
Yobe Governor Buni Responds
The state’s governor, Mai-Mala Buni, has expressed sorrow over the death.
The governor described the circumstances surrounding the murder in a statement through his media assistant, Mamman Mohammed, as “sad, regrettable and most unfortunate”.
“The alleged circumstances surrounding the death are most unfortunate and will be investigated thoroughly.
“Government will ensure that every detail is investigated and anyone found wanting, will face the full wrath of the law. The state government will work closely with the security agencies to unravel every detail to ensure justice is done,” the governor said.
The governor said he sympathised with the family of the deceased cleric, the people of Bade local government area and the entire state over the death.
He called on residents to remain calm and law-abiding and that investigation into the killing was ongoing and would be pursued to its logical conclusion.
He prayed to Allah for the repose of the soul of the deceased and to his immediate family and the entire people of the state, the fortitude to bear the loss.
