Mohammed Adow, a former journalist for Al Jazeera, has been chosen via the ballot to represent Kenya’s Wajir South in parliament.

Adow won the parliamentary seat on the Orange Democratic (ODM) platform. He has more than 20 years’ experience reporting from across Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Mohammed holds a master’s degree in Media, Communications and Public Relations from the University of Leicester. Before joining Al Jazeera English in 2006 Mohammed worked with the BBC World Service for 10 years.

In early January 2014, Mohammed Adow was expelled from South Sudan for reporting on the anti-government advance on the capital, Juba.

With 13,990 votes, he defeated MP Mohamud Sheikh Mohammed, who had been in office.

Mohammed Adow, who was born and raised in Garissa County in northeastern Kenya, has experienced the political and economic marginalization of this region of the country.

Adow said, “The people of Wajir South have my commitment to always work hard for them and listen to them. This was not about me but all of us, working hand in hand to bring progress to our land long plagued by regression. I love you and I promise not to let you down.”

Sheikh Mohammed, who was his nearest competitor, garnered 4,293 votes.

Abdullahi Yussuf Noor received 7,317 votes, followed by Mohamed Kahiye Bullet (1,274), Khalif Abdi Ali (654), and Dekow Noor Ali (53), who were the other competitors in the race.

He successfully defeated competitors, including the current MP, Mohammed, in his first attempt to win the parliamentary seat.
